Eski adı "Pazarköy"dür; 1362'de Orhan Bey tarafından burada bir cami ve hamam yaptırılmış, 1913'te kurucusu Orhan Bey'in adına atfen "Orhangazi" olarak değiştirilmiştir. İlipınar Höyüğü'ndeki kazılar, bölgede 8.000 yıl öncesine uzanan bir yerleşim geçmişi olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. 1893'te ilçe statüsü kazanmıştır.
